How Much Does Digital Signage Really Cost?

Ask a vendor what digital signage costs and you'll get a number for the thing they sell. Ask what a working installation costs and the answer is longer, because a screen on a wall is perhaps half the real spend. This is the breakdown nobody volunteers: every line item, including the ones that surprise people in month two.
The four costs that always exist
- The display itself — a commercial panel, or a consumer TV if you accept the trade-offs below.
- A player — the device that actually runs your content. A stick, a small PC, or nothing at all if the panel runs it natively.
- Software — the platform that schedules content and manages screens, almost always per screen per month.
- Mounting and installation — bracket, cabling, power, and someone's labour to put it up safely.
Commercial panel or a consumer TV?
A consumer TV is dramatically cheaper and works fine — until it doesn't. Consumer sets are rated for roughly 6–8 hours a day, not the 12–16 a shop floor demands; they often lack a portrait mode, they'll show a standby logo when the input drops, and they will happily switch themselves off after a period of "inactivity" because nobody is pressing a remote. Commercial panels cost more and buy you continuous-duty rating, portrait orientation, better anti-glare, and crucially an auto-power-on behaviour that survives a power cut. For a single screen in a low-stakes spot, a consumer TV is a defensible saving. For anything you'd be embarrassed to see dark, it isn't.
The cheapest screen is the one you don't have to drive across town to restart.
The player: the cost most often overpaid
Purpose-built signage players are sold at a premium that the hardware rarely justifies. An Android TV stick handles a looping playlist perfectly well. A Raspberry Pi does too. And an increasing number of commercial panels — Samsung Tizen and LG webOS in particular — run signage software natively on the panel's own processor, which removes the player, its power supply, its cable and its failure mode entirely. If a platform only supports one kind of player, that's a constraint on your budget, not a technical necessity.
The line items nobody quotes
- Electricity — a large panel running 14 hours a day is a real, recurring number on the bill.
- Network — screens in back corridors often need a powerline adapter or an access point nobody budgeted for.
- Content creation — the single most underestimated cost, and the one that decides whether the screen works at all.
- Someone's time — updating content is a job. If it isn't anyone's job, the screen goes stale in about six weeks.
- Replacement — panels fail, sticks die. Assume attrition across a multi-screen network.
Where software pricing actually varies
Nearly all signage platforms charge per screen per month, so your software cost scales linearly with the network. What varies enormously is what's included at the bottom tier. Watch for features that are standard elsewhere but gated here: multi-zone layouts, scheduling and dayparting, proof-of-play logs, user roles, and API access. A cheap plan that omits scheduling isn't cheap — it's a plan you'll outgrow the first time you want different content at breakfast and dinner.
A sane way to budget
Price the first screen fully — panel, player, mount, install, software, and a realistic content budget — then multiply the recurring parts by your screen count and add a contingency for the network work you haven't discovered yet. Resist the temptation to buy ten screens at once. One screen running well for a month teaches you more about your content cadence, your placement and your actual staffing need than any amount of planning, and it's a far cheaper mistake to make.
